Racism is a social issue that has affected the United States in the time the book takes place (in the 1930s) and in today time. In to Kill a Mockingbird the character that suffers from racism is Tom Robinson that is on trial for a false accusation that he raped Mayella Ewell. He is a target because of his race in the segregated south. He even has evidence showing that he was not guilty, but the justice system went against him this shows that the criminal justice system is unfair. I am against racism. In today time defendants of color skin often receive harder sentences for the same crimes white people commit, and as you can see the criminal justice system is not always fair to people who are of color. A majority of Americans say 64 percent said racism remains a major problem...

In recent years, sales of George Orwell’s classic novel 1984 have spiked. The hellish dystopian world he describes seems very unrealistic, but for 25.5 million North Koreans, it’s quite similar to how they live every day. According to BBC, “The state controls everything, and actively spies on its citizens using a vast surveillance and informer network.” Sound familiar? The article goes on to note that “everyone is indoctrinated to treat the Kim family almost as something to worship.” As if it weren’t already Orwellian enough, North Korea also has one of the world’s biggest open labor camps. There are between 80,000 and 120,000 people in prison, but not all of them have even committed crimes. North Korea practices collective punishment, so a lot of the people who are imprisoned are the...

Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health problem that can occur after a traumatic event like war. What led me to thinking about this topic PTSD, was from the book “Slaughterhouse-five” written by Kurt Vonnegut. In this book there is a character named Billy was in the military. Billy saw a lot of people die while fighting in the military. When Billy came out of the war, you could tell he had the symptoms of PTSD and suffered from PTSD. Because of this illness he traveled back in time to find and get his life back. While reading this book I have noticed that PTSD is not a good thing and should be addressed. People who have PTSD should receive special treatment and benefits. I think that PTSD should be treated because it’s a mental issue and in “...

Censorship is all around us; in entertainment, books, schools, the internet. Only 31% of Earth’s population live with complete freedom on the internet, and there are dozens of classic books that have been censored in the United States for reasons such as violence, inappropriate language, and sexual content. Regardless of the content, though, in the novel Fahrenheit 451, every book is banned. Because of this, there is no free access to knowledge. History is forgotten, poetry and story left behind. The penalty for owning a book is its immediate destruction. After reading this book, I’ve concluded that censorship hinders people’s ability to think on their own and make decisions for themselves and should not be allowed. Any censorship by the government on a citizen or their content is a...

Free will in Relationships in Relations with novel 1984 “Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.” (Human) This is one of everyone’s basic human rights to only be in a relationship if they consent to it; however, not everyone gets this right. In the novel 1984, the main character Winston falls in love with another character named Julia. Even though the society the novel is taking place in, these characters can’t be together. Winston is already married but he is not in love with his wife and wants to be with Julia. The government has so much control over their society that him having feelings for Julia is a crime that could mean death. In todays world you see that a lot. Even though the penalty isn’t death, these people still find...

Racism is a important topic, racism was what people lived and live by. Racism affects people’s lives both physically and emotionally. The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a novel that’s audience is the general public. Skeeter wanted to write this book to show people how the black maids were treated, and black people in general. Skeeter grew up with a maid who she loved and cared about, and she learned a lot from her. Skeeter wanted everyone to realize that black people were not bad people and they like everyone else is just trying to support themselves and their families. This book was after Rosa Parks made her movement and black people could sit where ever they wanted on the bus and they didn’t have to give there seat up to a white person. Racism is a problem and people should be...

Imagine a closed off America, a country born of a rebellion against the suppression of rights now turned to censor the expression past ancestors once fought for the freedom to have. This depiction is shown perfectly in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, a novel painting a picture of a future where books are simply fuel for the fire, and the only information given to the population has no substantial value. Though fiction, the conditions of censorship described in Fahrenheit 451 are very real in today’s world, and has been since the time of the Romans. From minor restrictions in the U.S. of books to the extremes in countries such as Iran, China, or North Korea, where researching certain topics is forbidden by the government, and could warrant arrest. These governments control the flow...

Government Censorship Essay Noor Salam Censorship is the prohibition of speech, public communication, parts of books, films, news, or other information that can be considered distasteful, harmful, sensitive, or offensive. Has it ever occurred that around 416 books have been banned or challenged in 2017? Many things are censored in this society to the point where the public is slowly losing information instead of gaining it. Through the frequent use of censorship from the government, in today’s society people are lacking the information, knowledge, and permission to say anything which also raises issues of freedom of speech. Censorship involves the suppression of speech or public communication and raises issues of freedom of speech. The use of censorship is very frequent in the...

Imagine being a young child and being looked at differently on the playground, for a reason oblivious to you. Imagine growing up and watching people clutch their purses tighter as you walk past them. Imagine being harassed and assaulted by a cop when he accuses you of false crimes. Imagine being scared for your child’s first day of school, afraid of what the other children might call them. This is what black people all around the world have to face on a daily basis. What originally got me thinking about the subject of racism was the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a book about a family in the 1930’s south (Alabama), where the father, Atticus-who is a lawyer, took on a case of a young black man (Tom Robinson) who was accused of a rape he didn’t do. Throughout the book you see...

Censorship in The Real World Should one man be able to control the actions of another? Should we live in a world where all men aren't created equal? I ask this because as children, we're taught that all humans are created equal and have the right to freedom. We believe that in today's world, it would be impossible for a country to get away with censorship (a different term for modern day slavery). There's no possible way that someone could control another person in today's world. But yet, it continues to happen. In countries like North Korea, most of their citizens are treated like slaves, forced to do whatever the government tells them to do. They have no rights and can often be put in jail for simply disagreeing with the government. This world is a lot like the one described in...
