In China there are two things that are no big secret these days...

1) 42% of Chinese cities have toxic air pollution while 68% have toxic water pollution.

2) The Chinese government is known to block "bad news" web sites that might annoy or anger their citizens. In reality many governments, including America does the same unethical thing.

But this "bad news" is now affecting 35% of Chinese couples who cannot get pregnant and wondering why. To get to the point, the air and water pollution along with the over-use of pesticides on China's fruits and vegetables are affecting the reproductive systems of the Chinese population according to Oxford University researchers and 9 other study groups. There is yet another problem. Even the 65% of couples who can get pregnant have a 1 in 8 chance that their baby will be born with a birth defect. Such defects can be minor (a missing toe or finger) to something serious like weak hearts or dysfunctional kidneys, or blindness. Again this is due to heavy metals and chemicals ingested by the parents.

Healthy children in the Chinese culture, like every other culture, are treasured, but even more so because only last week was the one-child policy of China lifted. Still, Chinese parents spend 40% of their income raising their children. Westerners might say Chinese kids are pampered or spoiled, but in China, indulging in parenthood is simply a part of life for 5,000 years and is a trend that will probably never change.

Sadly, every 30 seconds a baby is born with birth defects in China. To make matters worse, many babies are also autistic but will not be diagnosed for 3 to 5 years since many appear to be quite normal. Only when they fail to speak or start having behavioral problems will parents realize "something is wrong" and then get the horrible surprise after visiting the pediatrician.

But what is the solution for the 35% of the frustrated couples, as well as some 120 divorced women who want children but may not find a new husband before their biological clocks run out of time? There is a group in of foreign parents who became aware of this plight and have formed a non-profit organization called Blessings From Abroad. To avoid interference from the Chinese government, they have kept a low-profile, but utilize healthy sperm or egg donors and high technology to help these couples get pregnant legally and at half the cost they would be charged by a fertility clinic in China.
