I have a few questions for everyone out there posting all of these hate memes about president Obama visiting Japan over the holiday. I saw one earlier that was straight up calling the President a "douchebag" for placing a mourning wreath on a monument in Japan. My first question is, do you actually know anything about the holiday you are so loudly and rudely trying to be jaded and indignant over? I get that Memorial Day is an American holiday. That basically means America came up with it. I get it. Thank you Wikipedia. But do you get the significance of a holiday created to mourn our most nobel fallen? Part of it is to mourn the men and woman that died protecting their country, but another part of it is to reflect on the price of their death. Firstly, it wasn't just Japanese people who died when we dropped those bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, our own citizens were there as well, so appease your "patriotic" appetites with that. Secondly, death is death. This was unarguably one of the most tragic things that has happened in the history of our country, let alone the world. Is it so wrong that even on a day only we make special on our own calendars that we reflect, show respect, and mourn the dead of a tragedy like this? The President: OUR President shows public displays of respect and gratitude to our American troops that have fallen. Maybe not as much as some would like, but the display is still made. Thirdly, he went over there to not only strengthen ties with a nation that has become significant to us, but to address the nuclear threat. This is a massive issue that most of us are too busy reading about zoo tragedies and some lady with a chewbacca face on YouTube, to actually worry about. A threat that only gets bigger with this next election, regardless of who wins, because both options are too irresponsible to be left with that kind of power. It's a threat that gets bigger with every year we as a collective group of nations on this one tiny planet refuse to address and downsize our nuclear arsenal. Did it ever occur to anyone that he made this trip and did what he did to try and save future American citizens from their own wreath and unopened beer on this day? Celebrate how you celebrate and judge how I know you all will, but also, reflect. Do you think the pilots that dropped those bombs did that lightly and with no remorse? I bet they know the cost of a mans life. American or not. I'm sorry the point of his visit was lost on you. I'm sorry that instead of spending this holiday in uninterrupted celebration of your loved ones sacrifices, you decided to hate and spread hate. I love you America. I spent 4 years serving you and would always do it again, but all the hate and lack of empathy is heartbreaking and disappointing. One day, maybe America will be great again. One day maybe.
