To men and women who don’t know what feminism is or think that’s it dumb and annoying, I’m writing this because I would like to educate you on it and things that have happened today that revolves around feminism. In my book The House Of Spirits by Isabelle Allende that I had to read in my English class feminism is brought up quite a bit. One of the characters named Esteban got a village girl pregnant and from there on out thought that she couldn’t do anything. He thought of he as an object more than a human. He then kept treating her like crap. The definition of feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes, he didn’t treat her equally at all. I can relate to this because I as a girl see everything day to day about women getting degraded for...

To anyone who wants to make a difference, In my High school English class our teacher made my class pick out of a couple of “Classic books”. At first I was disappointed, all the books I was interested in were already chosen. I ended up getting stuck with the “Classic” Crime and punishment. I say “Classic” because how on earth is anything that is that hard to read considered a “Classic”?! Anyways, In the beginning of the book we learn that the main character, Raskolnkov Is a man living in extreme poverty and he is a hypochondriac alcoholic. Rask is so poor that he comes up with this idea that he should kill the pawnbroker to get away from owing her money! What a great well thought out plan, huh? Yeah, not exactly. Rask ends up killing the pawnbroker then her sister comes in...

To The Students Who Are And Will Be Affected By Peer Pressure By Lawrence Crockett Dear students, acquaintances, peers, and those alike, I would like to say that I get it. School can be an extremely stressful time for anyone. You are expected to take several classes (where homework is given out every day), make the decision of a career want to pursue for the rest of your life, work at an awful job that pays minimum wage, somehow manage to gather up the money from that job to pay for an unreasonably priced college, figure out how to handle and drive a car that could fall apart at any moment, and somehow manage to still function properly when you are required to be at school at seven in the morning when you only had four hours of sleep because you forgot you didn’t start on an essay...

Recently I have read Atlas Shrugged. As much as it was a mountain to read I managed to take a away a few key concepts that really changed my perspective on how I see the rest of the world. In Atlas Shrugged its begins with all these successful businesses and they are at the height of their power. However, one by one these companies slowly begin to fall off the face of the earth and abandon their companies. The emotional impact of a group of people called “The Looters” had finally taken its toll. The looters would latch on to these successful companies and instead of contributing trickle down responsibility while still trying to make money off the company’s success. For example, in the book Taggart transcontinental was a very successful railroad company. It was owned by a man named...

I recently had to read the Scarlett letter for my high school ELA class. We had the choice between several books; and I’m not going to lie, I chose this one because it was one of the shortest on the list. This book actually turned out to be very interesting. The book is about Hester Prynne, who lives in 1600s Boston. She has a sexual affair which produces a child and gets unfairly judged for it for the rest of her life. Her husband “Chillingsworth” returns unexpectantly and makes it his life’s mission to expose the father of Hester’s child. At the end we realize that Dimmesdale, the reverend of the town, is the father of the child. Everyone in town realizes that they are wrong for judging Hester. Just like the people of today, Hester is unnecessarily judged and stigmatized for the...

In my Honors Comp and Lit class I had to read “Crime and Punishment.” At first, I hated it. Then I realized the meaning of the book. Crime and punishment is about a man named, Raskolnikov who is in poverty. He is thinking of ways to get out of poverty though. He gets a thought to kill his pawnower. The first time he had that thought, it made him scared and sick. “What a devil! He cried suddenly and in impatience deserting his duty, he, too, went down hurrying and thumping with his heavy boots on the stairs. The steps died away.” (Chapter 7) He finally goes through on his thought. He breaks into the pawnbroker’s house and kills her and steals from the dead women. While stealing from her the dead women’s half-sister walks in on the crime scene. He kills her without a thought. After the...

Have you ever wondered how poverty has effected people throughout the years? Well, I have too. My reason for reading this book, was 1.) because I had to choose a book to read during class. And 2.) because I wanted to learn more about poverty wrote in a book. That’s why I chose ‘Great Expectations.’ In the book ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens, lives a boy, struck by poverty, looking over his parents’ grave. Pip is raised by his sister, who, even though was very physical with her siblings, gave all that she could to Pip and his siblings. In the very beginning of the book, Pip gets interrogated by a convict, (not knowing that the guy was a convict until later on in the novel), and he has to bring the convict some things. Pip follows through, even giving the guy part...

I recently came across a story in a few different places on the internet. Titled something like "Ben Shapiro Debunks Transgenderism!!" or "Ben Shapiro Brutally Destroys Millennial Complaining About Transgender Rights!!" or even this nuanced, well balanced gem "BOOM! Ben Shapiro Lays Waste To Vapid Leftist In Transgender Debate", the story, always on a very conservative site, then goes on to detail how conservative speaker Ben Shaprio "debunks", "brutally destroys" and "lays waste to" both transgender individuals and their rights. How does he do so? With time honoured anti-trans arguments such as "If I call you a moose, are you suddenly a moose?" and asking a 22 year old "Why aren't you 60? Why can't you identify as 60?" as well as citing a study on transgender suicide rates...

I'm a fan of Bollywood since I'm 14 years old and today I'm 26. I discover Bollywood through my geographic lessons at school with bend it like beckam. If I decided to wrote that open letter today, it is to show my point of view on what it looks like being a black Bollywood fan. Why? Because some people don't see an Haitian girl being fan of Bollywood or I must say in my case India. Those 2 things doesn't seem to go well together why, I don't know. At my house, I have at least 100 and counting of Indian movies, 4 or 5 books about learning Hindi,1 book about the Indian culture and 3 books about traveling in India. I also convinced my mother to add 3 Indian channels in our tv box because of my love of Bollywood movies and Koffee with Karan. But people still look at me in a...

An open letter to Curtis Hart, Andy Huffman, and Muirah Imhoff of Cowlitz County, Washington as well as Irma Ybarra-Hill and Paula Brownhill of Clatsop County, Oregon. It's not a feeling like I COULD kill myself. Just that I think it would make sense. With the bills and the people. The way the look at me and dismiss me so easily. I feel worthless. I can't see it getting much better. My old friends will never return. On their own or otherwise. I apparently can't do enough of the right kind of work to support myself or earn their respect. I cost more resources than I provide. My life is unhappy and I do very little to improve anyone else's environment or personal feelings. I am a black spot. Filth. Garbage. I have only been pretending to fit in and I've been doing a...
