In my Honors Composition and Literature class my teacher assigned us to read a classic novel and to pick an important reoccurring subject within the novel. The book she assigned me was “The Count of Monte Cristo”, by Alexandre Dumas. When summarizing the book, she stressed how this book is really all about how the main character seeks revenge on the people who set him up in order to send him to prison. So right there I knew what I was going to be writing about, Revenge. Dantes (Monte Cristo) is the main character, he’s about 19 and is the new appointed Captain of The Pharon, he’s recently engaged to the beautiful Mercedes, and is very close to his elderly father. Danglar and Fernand envy Dantes and plan to have him sent away. They write a fake letter showing that Dantes has been...

To anyone who serves as a mentor, There are two types of pride; sometimes when a child is prideful that is a good thing. I was assigned to read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand for my Honors Composition and Literature class, and I loved it. Ayn Rand is one of my favorite authors, and The Fountainhead kept up with that opinion. Now, I know that my love of classics isn’t necessarily the popular opinion, so assuming that most of you haven’t read it let me explain. Imagine a world where advancement is shunned, and humility and selflessness are the rules of the world. Genius and creativity are subdued; society is ruled by the philosophy that “everything beautiful… has been done already” (Rand). The characters of The Fountainhead live in this world, some fall into step, but others fight...

Dear Feminists and Anti-Feminists, I was assigned to read a classic novel in my Honors Lit. and Comp. class. The novel The Woman in White was about how a guy fell in love with a girl who had major family issues. Including the fact that she was being forced to marry someone much older than her only to realize he was marrying her for her family’s money. However, there was many oddly dissatisfying parts in the book that made you want to jump up and take a stand and that’s what I’ll be writing about today. When I first got into the book I was definitely a little lost and taken back by how oddly satisfying the book had gotten in Section 2, Chapter 2, Part 1. There were multiple points where women didn’t have a voice in the novel, well rather they had a voice they just felt like...

I read The Great Gatsby a story about a guy named Nick who personally did have a lot of money growing up, then he moved next door to Gatsby, a man who has/had a lot of money. Gatsby is a man who has parties over the summer long into the nights just to have Daisy, his childhood sweetheart, come to one. She never did though. Daisy and her husband Tom are in a relationship but it isn’t a healthy one. Tom is having an affair with a woman. And Daisy is/was in love with Gatsby. This is a tragic story of a man trying to use money to gain love, but in the end, money can’t buy happiness. In chapter eight Wilson finds the silver braided collar that Tom got his mistress. Tom has money to buy a silver braided dog collar. In chapter five Gatsby shows daisy all of his fancy shirts and she starts...

In the beginning of the book finny breaks his leg. Gene was climbing up the tree at the same time and he bounced on the branch and made it shake. When finny fell and broke his leg a huge feeling of guilt came over gene. (chapter 4) In the middle of the book finny opens up about his desire to do great in sports. He had great athleticism and even wanted to go to the Olympics. Since he fell and broke his leg gene felt guilty because he knew it was his fault that his dreams wouldn’t be accomplished. (chapter 8) At the end of the book finny dies while getting his bone set and after it is broken again. Gene was the cause of the meeting he stormed out of and he feels like if he didn’t fall down that he wouldn’t have died when he was getting the bone reset. (chapter 12) A similar life...

The American Dream Isaiah Dye Have you ever had a dream, or wondered what it would be like living in a huge mansion? Wouldn’t it be awesome to drive a brand new sports car every day, or even own your own personal cruise ship or yacht? I think about things like this a lot, I’m sure I’m not the only one, anyone who’s thought about the American dream may have too, especially after reading this book called “The Great Gatsby,” For my Honors Composition and Literature class in high school. We have to write this open letter, and at first I had no idea what topic to pick out for the book, but when I found it I related pretty well to it. If you haven’t read it, it’s about a rich guy named Jay Gatsby who is in love with this Girl, and although she loved him she married another guy named...

Dear people who need to realize that family is very important, February 23, 2017 In my Honors Comp and Lit class I was forced to read The House of the Spirits. I was not looking forward to it at all, and once I opened it my little amount of enthusiasm was crushed even more, it was very word heavy and not very interesting. Once I got into it though, I started to relate to it and see people I know in the characters of the book. I ended up really liking the book in the end because of how I saw my own father in Esteban Trueba (the main father figure). The House of the Spirits was a book about a few generations of a family and all of their successes, struggles, and everything everyone went through over 80 or so years. It went into topics like the treatment of women, political power,...

Dear Society, I walked in my English class one day and was assigned some old book called “Crime and Punishment” and was told to read it. The book its self is extremely hard to understand. Due to the type of context they use and older language, it makes everything harder to understand. But basically The story is about a poor man named Rask has nothing to lose. This man has several issues that people would call crazy or insane. He’s not a religious man so he feels that crime or even murder can be justified as long as you have something to “offer to humanity” he goes through several struggles during this book and meets two major friends, Sonia and Razum. Which is just a nick name I gave him cause his actual name is too long. In this book Rask’s close friends Sonia is just as broke as he...

Last month my Honors Composition and Literature teacher assigned me to read the classic novel Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I’d heard of the book beforehand but never was really interested in reading it, as it wasn’t the genre I normally enjoy. I now write this having read Crime and Punishment and will tell you that it was an absolute dreadful book that constantly made me want to take a nap after reading a section of it. For those who haven’t read this classic novel let me give you a brief summary. Crime and Punishment is about a man named Raskolnikov committing a murder of an old pawnbroker and her sister and the psychological effects the murder caused Raskolnikov to feel. In the book Dostoyevsky shows through multiple examples that guilt can drive a person crazy until...

I was assigned to read The Scarlett Letter in my Honors Comp. Class and I was not excited to read it at all. Dreaded it in fact. I did put two and two together though, that the movie Easy A was based off of the book I was about to read! Even though I didn’t have any interest in reading the book there was some important lessons and surprisingly some things I, as a teenage girl, could relate to. Hester Prynne was basically like some young girls who are shamed for just being themselves. My letter is to any woman or girl who has been shamed for the decisions she makes with her body. I hope to bring conversation about the reality of sexism in America today, and why it is important that it changes. There is a lot of misconceptions and confusion about what really goes on, and for there to be...
