To the little sister I got to choose,

I’m writing this to you because there are a few things I need you to know. I am writing this to you because I want to see all of your dreams come true and because I want to see you succeed and change the world one day, just as I know you can. I am writing this to you because I want you to be able to understand the things I had to learn on my own.

I want you to know and understand that life isn’t always easy. Things will get hard. You are going to be overwhelmed. At times you may even feel lost. I’m here to tell you that I believe in you. Step back and take a breath; I know you will make it through to better days. I know this because I know you are stronger than anything this life has to challenge you with. I know this because you have a God that never disappoints. And I know this because you will always have me to lean on.

I want you to understand that there comes a time when everything changes. You’re approaching graduation and I want you to know that your high school friends are going to become distant and you may never speak to some of them again. It’s okay. It’s normal. It’s life. Once again, you have a God that never disappoints. If the friendship was meant to last, it will. Don’t stress it. Things change, people change.

I want you to understand that your heart is going to be broken. Not just by boys, but by your friends too. People will be mean to you. It’s a part of this crazy life we live. It will honestly suck. Take it; learn from it; grow from it. Use it as a measure of how great your real friends truly are. Those who stick by you; those who help you; those who are there for you to cry on; they are the ones you want to hold onto and try not to lose. They are the people who will keep you grounded. They are the people who care about your success.

I want you understand that family is important. No matter how inconsistent your friends are, your family is forever. Hold them tight and love them extra. They will aggravate you at times but I promise you that you will always need them. Take this from me. I didn’t believe people when they said moving away from home was the hardest thing they’ve ever done. Now that I’m experiencing it, I wish I would’ve never taken the simple things for granted.

Lastly, I want you to understand the love I have for you. Although I do not have a sister, I am forever grateful to have been blessed with someone like you in my life. You have shown me endless love and support in all that I do and I couldn’t ever thank you enough. You know all of my secrets and you listen in whenever I need to vent. There are very few people like you in this world. You have such a genuine soul. You are in every way a role model to me and I truly wish nothing but the best for you always. You are the little sister I got to choose. I love you!
