An open letter to the government of the UK and the Conservative party:
Dear politicians,
I think you should listen to this. Why? Because I am one of your prized swing voters. I change which party I vote for based on the issues of the day and what I think is in the best interests of the country as a whole. I have voted for all three of the traditional major parties over the last 20 years and I have no allegiance. That being said, my natural allegiance is probably slightly to the right of centre and therefore I should be a natural tory voter. We'll come to that.
Also I have a lot of interests that I am aware of and concerned about. I have been a serving Army officer, a long term user of major NHS services, a single parent, an active sports coach, a mental health patient and a small business owner. I have seen a lot of life!
Let's be clear. I understand that there is not a lot of money around and that cuts need to be made to get us back onto an even keel. I'm not interested at this moment in the whys and wherefores. What I'm interested in is how we go about dealing with the current situation.
Do I understand that tough decisions need to be made? Yes...
What there is no excuse for though is a lack of compassion for the people for whom it is your job to provide effective government.
What I see now is a party and government that is behaving in a cavalier and uncaring manner. You are going to lose support fast if you carry on with your current manner of behaviour. Your dealing with those who need benefits, the Junior Doctors and now the 3000 children is starting to make me angry.
I voted for the Lib Dems last time (yes I did..) because I wanted another coalition. I voted you in the previous time but I wanted the coalition then. You have proved that I was right. Without the balancing centre you have veered dangerously to the right but above all you are displaying no compassion for your people.
You are there to work for us and it now feels dangerously as though you do not care about us, the people.
When I was at Sandhurst I was taught that in order to lead others you serve them. Serve to Lead. I don't see this in your behaviour. I see an uncaring and bigoted group drifting more towards extremism.
Think about it.
Yours faithfully...
A concerned citizen...
