On Facebook, I recently read an Open Letter from some random lady who said that parents of dogs are not real parents. So, on behalf of pet parents everywhere... Here is my letter to you:
Don't tell me I am not a mother. I raised both of my babies. From day one, I gave them my whole heart and soul. I taught them, I worried about them, I took them to their doctor when they got sick or needed a check-up. I feed them their breakfast and dinner every day, and make sure they have clean, fresh water. I bathe them, and make sure they have a warm bed to sleep in. I discipline them when they do wrong, and I praise them when they do right. I comfort them when they are sad or scared, and I playfully rejoice with them when they are happy or excited. I buy toys for them to play with, and take things away from them that they shouldn't play with, or that could harm them. I will defend and protect them with every fiber of my being. And if anyone ever tried to hurt them, or take them from me, I would kill for them or die for them... Just as the mother of a human child would do.
So, no I didn't give birth to them... But don't tell me, for one second, that I am not a mother. I am a better mother to my 5 & 6 year old dogs than many women are, to their own flesh and blood.
