To men and women who don’t know what feminism is or think that’s it dumb and annoying,
I’m writing this because I would like to educate you on it and things that have happened today that revolves around feminism.
In my book The House Of Spirits by Isabelle Allende that I had to read in my English class feminism is brought up quite a bit. One of the characters named Esteban got a village girl pregnant and from there on out thought that she couldn’t do anything. He thought of he as an object more than a human. He then kept treating her like crap. The definition of feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes, he didn’t treat her equally at all.
I can relate to this because I as a girl see everything day to day about women getting degraded for being a girl or having “girl thoughts”. At school girls get talked about by guys on what their wearing. Guys tend to think that girls cant do the same things guys can. In this years election it was kind of based on feminism. The race was between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Many did not vote for her because she’s a girl and the country thought that she couldn’t do the things that a guy in office would. They thought that she would make rash decisions based on her mood. They didn’t think that shed be a good leader because she is a woman. Girls everyday everywhere get torn down. Girls get a bad reputation no matter what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.
Back in January a women’s march happened in Washington where more than one million women gathered to protest. They gathered to be heard. People marched for themselves, each other, grandparents, kids and future kids. It was a protest to Trump’s inauguration, it was to say that they did not agree with the things that Trump stood for. He then had a negative response to the protest. He most definitely ignored the fact that they were trying to be heard and they were trying to day that they wont be forgotten and that they will stand to be equal. 26% of women count themselves as a feminist and 16% of males think of themselves of feminist. The other percent do think that men and woman should be equal in the political and social aspect.
Feminism isn’t something that one just says they are just to say it. It is to show what you stand for and not let anyone make you feel like you’re not important or cant do what everyone else is can. I’m done having people think that since I am a girl that I cant handle or deal with what guys can. I’m tired of seeing women get degraded because guys and some girls don’t understand the meaning of feminism. We can do it and we will.
