Dear teachers,

It's nothing against you. I just happen to have a view on high school that you, on the other hand, do not. Look through my eyes for a minute...

If you knew me during high school, you would know that I suffered at the hands of tormentors and people who didn't like me just because of the way I dressed, the way I acted, or that I couldn't "do well" in school.

I suffered at the hands of teachers who would constantly lecture me because they didn't understand that the reason I didn't come to school everyday was because I was too busy dealing with the real world. Having a single mother who was ill and relied on her children to take care of her. While I was silently suffering from my own mental illness.

I was lucky enough that they kicked me out after completing the required Grade 12 courses. Handed me a diploma and sent me on my way.

Do I know how to file my taxes? Do I know how to get a mortgage on a house? Do I know how to properly manage my finances and manage my debt?

I studied subjects I will never use in my life. Not once since graduating 2 years ago have I applied Pythagoras Theorem nor do I know the value of x. How many subjects, texts, equations did I memorize never to use again?

We're all individuals and all have different thought processes. So why was I made to measure up to a class full of other individuals?

I wasn't "lazy", I wasn't interested in what society thought I needed to know. In what society thought would be imperative to my future.

So, you may think I've got it all wrong and that's okay. You're allowed to have your opinion.

But this is mine.
