Open letter to US President Barack Obama

Subject: Open letter to US President Barack Obama

Dear Mr President,

As a friend of the Caribbean and on behalf of the people of Trinidad and Tobago, I thank you for your continuing interest in assisting with our various nations to achieve their objectives.

It has been reported that you have agreed to attend a Caribbean Security Summit to be hosted in Trinidad and Tobago. According to an article in the local news media, it is reported that, “The United States has agreed to a Caribbean Security Summit as early as June, following deep regional concerns about the growing number of issues which could affect the Caribbean region if left unchecked. Agreement was reached following Thursday’s Caricom-US Summit at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, where Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar made the request for the summit.”

Mr President we are extremely grateful for this intervention but are extremely concerned by the timing of this event, where the people of Trinidad and Tobago must elect a government by September 2015. As the political leader of one of the parties offering ourselves as alternatives to the current administration to the people of Trinidad and Tobago, in which the matter of national security will be a major campaign issue, we believe that your visit during an election campaign can be seen as endorsement by you of this current administration.

We therefore believe that your visit should take place after this election or alternatively the location for this summit should be in a jurisdiction other than one where an election is imminent.

We thank you for your understanding in this matter and remain committed to doing the best for our citizens as we continue to improve the quality of their daily lives. We believe that we can make a positive difference and ask for your consideration in this matter.

Most respectfully

Jack Austin Warner
Political Leader
Independent Liberal Party
