An Open Letter to the Rt Hon William Hague MP

Dear William Hague

Quakers in Britain are deeply concerned by the escalating violence in Israel and Palestine, particularly Gaza. We know that you share our concerns for the region.

We welcome your statement (8 July 2014) in which you call for all sides to do their utmost to act with restraint and to address the underlying causes of conflict and instability in Gaza.

As Quakers we say the violent loss of every life diminishes us all. Death by rocket attack, air strikes or brutal murder is equally appalling. As a Religious Society, we believe every life is of equal value.

Quakers in Britain recognise your endeavours on the world stage and urge you to fully employ your resources as Foreign Secretary to ensure that all sides are heard. We ask you to encourage those involved to work through the United Nations, using diplomatic channels to find nonviolent solutions, based on the principles of international law and human rights, which over-ride national interests.

To create lasting peace with justice, based on equality and freedom, we must recognise that each act of violence and persecution is part of a longer narrative. To stop the cycle of violence and hatred, the root causes of war must be understood and treated.

Yours sincerely

Charlotte Seymour Smith

Clerk of Quaker Peace and Social Witness Central Committee
