This is an open letter to PM Modi why there is a double standard on cow slaughtering in India. On one hand, cow slaughtering is fully banned in most of the states but at the other hand, India is at the first rank in exporting beef. And the most cows and buffaloes used for export are being transported from states where cow slaughtering is fully banned.
As far as laws on cow slaughter is concerned, the states where beef is fully banned are Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Delhi, Telangana, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, J&K, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The states that allow cow slaughtering certificates usually include Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim and Manipur are the only states where there is no ban on cow slaughtering.
Now, the questions arises how much beef these 5 to 6 states are exporting. Obviously, this is not possible and it is clear that states that are banned for cow slaughtering are still breaking the law and this evil practice is going on there.
US Department of Agriculture has released a data in which it is clearly states that India is the world’s largest exporter of beef leaving behind Australia, Brazil and United States. As per reports, India exported 2.4 million tonnes of beef and veal during Financial Year 2015 while Brazil exported 2 million tonnes and Australia 1.5 million tonnes. These 3 countries account for 58.7 percent of all the beef exports in the world. It is surprising that India itself accounts for 23.5 percent of global beef exports.
The beef export of India is growing at rapid pace. You will be amazed to know that beef export in India is growing at the rate of 14 percent every year and India is earning as much as $4.8 billion alone from beef export which is much more than the basmati rice export.
According to data released by United Nations Food and Agriculture Outlook, meat consumption in India is increasing but the data clearly states that beef consumption is seducing drastically. Beef consumption has been reduced by 44.5% from the year 2000 while chicken consumption has been increasing since then.
Although, the cow slaughters in India has banned in many parts of India where majority of Hindu population resides.
How India became the top exporter of beef then?
How all these states which are banned for cow slaughter are exporting beef?
It is a fact that Maharashtra which is banned for cow slaughtering is playing major role in exporting beef. Despite Modi government’s move to ban slaughter of cows across various states, India is still the largest exporter of beef and it is really worrisome for the Hindu population of India.
Are they exporting cow’s meat along with buffalo meat?
It is to be believed that cow meat is illegally sold and even exported under the guise of buffalo meat. Ashoo Mongia, President of Rashtriye Goraksha Sena said that if you ask for halal Indian cow meat in Dubai, you can easily get it. The main reason for cow slaughtering is the ever expanding business which is making the owners rich. It could be a big racket that should be busted and we hope that Modi government should take it very seriously.
The Indian beef is high in demand throughout world mainly because the cows and buffaloes here are fed on natural pastures instead of pumping growth hormones. Inspite of Modi government efforts, the cow slaughtering in most of the states are thriving like never before. It is crucial to set a rigorous punishment for cow slaughtering. Presently, the punishment for cow slaughtering is just few rupees fine and 5 years prison which can be easily prevented.
When Narendra Modi, India’s current Prime Minister, ran for office in 2014, one platform he ran on was criticizing the ruling Congress Party-led government’s “Pink Revolution”—the nickname for India’s rising beef exports. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed the Congress Party for encouraging beef trade to woo India’s 180 million Muslims. Modi promised to curb the industry, a promise he hasn’t followed through with since he became Prime Minister last May.
The lack of a comprehensive, uniform law regarding cow slaughter makes it easier for people to find ways to kill cows if they want to. It is estimated that almost two million cows are smuggled across a 2,400-mile poorly-patrolled border from India into Bangladesh every year. Inside India’s borders, people dodge the law by smuggling cows to states where there are little or no penalties for cow slaughter. International anti-slaughter activist Rajhans says that India has about 3,600 legal slaughterhouses and 30,000 illegal ones, many of which slaughter cows.
It is clear that beef export was pumped up by Congress but it is the responsibility of Modi government to take implement measures to impose ban on cow slaughtering throughout India. Both legal and illegal slaughtering should be stopped.
We request the Indian PM to set up teams that can scrutiny the slaughter houses in India. Why this double standard on beef ban? The whole nations wants a simple answer to why slaughter houses either legally or illegally are still working in most of the Indian states?
