Dear Lucasfilm,

If you look at social media today you may notice the #JoeJohnstonForStarWars hash tag being used by Star Wars fans. The reason for this is the word that came out last night that the second Star Wars Anthology would focus on Boba Fett. As Joe Johnston is considered by many to be the father of Boba Fett, and he even wanted to make a Fett movie in the past, fans are rallying to his side to replace the departing Josh Trank on the movie.

Johnston has some great movies to his credit as a director, and I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that. From smaller movies such as October Sky to the more effects-heavy action films such as The Rocketeer and Captain America: The First Avenger, he’s cut from the same cloth as those who made Star Wars what it is. My love for The Rocketeer is every bit as great as it is for the Star Wars or Indiana Jones movies.

Mr. Johnston has expressed interest in making a Boba Fett movie in the past, and fans are well aware of this. If the rumors are true, then the second Anthology film is a Boba Fett story. So you have a director who’s last film was one of the better Marvel solo-installments, who knows the Boba Fett character, and has the support of just about every Star Wars fan. What are you waiting for Lucasfilm? This is a home run for you.

Most people suspect that Disney wants to hire a director who will please the fans. Much like the hiring of JJ Abrams to relaunch the Star Wars film franchise, many are suspecting that Disney is eyeing someone like Joss Whedon to earn fandom kudos. But as today’s #JoeJohnstonForStarWars social media campaign shows, the man the fans really want already has a history with the franchise and he already has the unanimous support of the fan base.

With your careful handling of the franchise, such as protecting it from creative controversies from certain writers and directors, Lucasfilm has been handling Star Wars very well ever since the Disney purchase. If you really want to continue the good will you currently have with the entire fan base, you’d seriously consider Joe Johnston as the director for the second Star Wars Anthology film.

Signed,
Star Wars fans.
