An Open Letter to Donald Trump

If I could have voted in this election, I would not have voted for you. This much is plain and simple.
Your hateful and insulting rhetoric filled me with anger and disgust these past fifteen months, and there was never a doubt in my mind that America would be sane enough to prevent you from entering office. As I watched you win primary after primary, the Republican National Convention, my stance remained unchanged, and I was still unable to fathom the thought of your presidency being a viable possibility. Who would elect such a racist? Somebody so sexist? A severe threat to the progress that has been made towards equality in this nation? Well, I guess the American people would, and did.

However, despite the dark period many feel we are now entering, I still hold steadfast in the idea that the United States can still symbolize a beacon of hope, a chance at prosperity, a light at the end of a now much longer tunnel.

America is undoubtedly experiencing a great divide, and only through your actions can you ever have a chance at proving that you can be a proper Commander in Chief for this already great nation. Talk is worthless, and will not bring the support you will need to survive this run. Half of this nation is not on your side, and many, including myself, are vehement opponents to not just you, but to your policies that put the equality and opportunity of this land in harm's way. Millions upon millions feel threatened and fearful over your election, and please know that those against you will be active and devote their time to make sure you do what is right for the ever-evolving population we have. Progress has already been lost with your election, and we cannot afford to lose more. I desperately wanted for Hillary Clinton to break the glass ceiling, but it is evident that America was not ready. I hope YOU are ready Mr. Trump because we who wished to see shattered glass will not put our hammers down. I still believe that we are stronger together, and unity is stronger than the divisions you have had a role in fostering this past year. You are responsible for instilling fear into the LGBT community, into Muslims, into Blacks, into Latinos, into the disabled, into women, and into anyone who believes that people should be treated with respect and dignity across all walks of life. Love will always trump hate, and it is only love that can help heal the wounds that have been endured, but do not forget, they will still leave scars.

So, as you embark on this journey, myself and many others will be watching with a close eye, and we will not forget the dark roots you have planted for yourself since you announced your candidacy. I would have much rather written to Hillary Clinton beaming at the joy and inspiration I feel at HER election, but in holding true to the values I believe are fundamental to the American identity, I will write to you and begin a journey toward the light that I know exists.

Good Luck Mr. Trump
