I knew this book by American literature class. My teacher said this book shows well about American issues. At first it was difficult to read English book. All the words are different what we use in common. But once I adjust in the book, it is getting easy. This book shows many issues that America has. In the book the biggest issue is racism. In the background of the book they have racism that white people are better than black people. They show readers many examples of racism. But I chose gender discrimination instead of racism. There is a girl name, Scout. She has older brother Jem and her friend Dill. She’s playing with them very often. So she is very active and sometimes she fought with boy. And Scout doesn’t have mother. Her father and people think she acting like a boy because she doesn’t have a mother so she couldn’t learn girl’s behavior. People think she need a mother and her aunt came Scout’s house for the kids. People told Scout to act like a girl. Stay in the house and drink teas like these things. Also, Jem and Dill didn’t play with Scout like before. People are trying to make Scout to act like girl but I can’t understand it. Why they told girl should act like girl. What is girl’s behavior for them. Maybe what they think in girl’s behavior is modest and quite. People can’t force to girl do like that. They can’t say girls have to be modest and boys be active. Personality is not depended on gender. And actually now, most of my friends like someone who is active and play well. For me, I also like someone who is talkative and who interested in playing sports. I don’t want a friend who is quite and modest. When I was young I heard like “Don’t be clumsy being a girl.” if I had a fault. They impacted the word “Girl”. I want to show this open letter and I want all women and men who think men are better than women. I want to make them to change their think. They should know that everyone is equal. There is no big difference between women and men. I know there are a lot less gender discrimination than the past. It is getting less and less. And people’s minds are changing. I hope discrimination gone and equal start for everyone. But also some women have too much victim mentality. They can say woman rights and be equal but cannot be women is better and women are weak so men should do every hard work or lady should be respected is not correct. I also hope this mind gone.
