Respected Professor Durkheim, I came to know of you and your work through my social anthropology teachers at the Department of Anthropology, University of Calcutta, which happened to be the oldest Anthropology Department in India established in the year 1920, seven years after the publication of your last major and one of the most influential books The Elementary Forms of Religious Life.(1913). Despite the fact that our British colonial masters founded the oldest Anthropology Department and we were taught to learn more of A.R.Radcliffe-Brown and his British structural-functional school, our teachers did not forget to remind us that Brown was largely influenced by you. As a corollary, we were also taught that you the French master was the source of Brown and you undoubtedly enjoyed more...

An Open Letter To The Rye Neck School District I am writing this around the same time of the two year anniversary in which I lost a good friend of mine to abuse of prescription drugs. Brandon was a true “friend to everybody”, he was an active member of the Mamaroneck community and was widely loved. This love did not only extend from Mamaroneck and their school district, the school in which he attended, he was loved by dozens of Rye Neck Students as well, I was one of them. His funeral was packed with Rye Neck Students, I was there. Mamaroneck High School kids, as well as Rye Neck Kids, all recognized a sort of tacit agreement. This could never happen again. We understood that. However, the reality of agreements like this is that pretty simple. Without pairing them with...

To Dr. Michael Kirst, Hello, I’m Carl Valdes from Redwood High school in the Tamalpais School district. Although both my school and district are in the top 35 in their rankings, I’m not here to praise them, I’m here to do the opposite. I’m writing to give you to give what my teachers call some friendly constructive criticism. I believe that for this to be effective though, one must throw out the rigid attitudes that come with formality, so if you’ll excuse my colloquial style, I’d like to share with you some of my concerns about today's education in California. As a seasoned, seventeen year-old I’ve seen my fair share of tests, grades, and teachers. While being from some of the best schools in the state, I’ve got probably some of the best teaching there is in California, for public...

I pay you thousands and thousands of dollars per quarter for services here on campus. Yet you stingy jerks ask me to pay fifteen cents for printing!! Why?!? Was my thousands of dollars not good enough for multiple printers but it was good enough to add millions of staff parking spots!! Oh that reminds me, thanks a lot bozos for deciding to add a huge building to campus I am just going to love that big beautiful meditative view of grey blocks and the rocking construction noises during finals week. Thank you I really love it. Did you ever think abut maybe investing in any number ply toilet paper instead of that sand paper on a roll you got going on? On the subject of bathrooms, hygiene its your friend not your enemy I beg of you to please clean those filthy stalls. How about instead of...

Dear School Board, I’m sure that you are aware that many kids in Richmond go to public schools where they receive an education from under paid caring teacher but in crumbling buildings with rat infested walls. Two years ago, I went to William Fox Elementary school. Fox is a public school in the heart of Richmond. While Fox is one of the better off schools in the city, my fifth grade homeroom teacher let me know about the problems in other schools. She convinced me to attend a city council meeting where I heard teachers, parents and even some kids speak for what they thought was right. They told stories of ceiling tiles falling on people's heads, and teacher getting to school early to clean rat poop off of desks. The fact that kids have gotten injured from poorly maintained...

Hello, I am a homeschooling parent in Greenville, Ms. I follow all the rules fill out all the paperwork and do not have school during the summer months, so imagine my surprise when in early to mid June a Ms. Esters showed up at my house with 2 other workers to inform me that I was under investigation because a woman who had never been in my house and did not know me or my children called them to say that her sister my 6-year-old at the time was not in school. Now let me say again she lives in California, she does not know me and this was in June but calling her moms friend who works at CPS gave her leverage because Ms. Esters does not believe in " homeschool" her words to me.Now because I went to her supervisor who was never in the office she decided that it was her right to tell...

So what do you need to legally teach and/or tutor in China? Every single day, an estimated 300 people around the world, who never taught a thing in their lives to a single student, are persuaded to "come teach English in China" and because they may be struggling economically in their lives, recovering from a broken relationship, or simply want a little adventure, say "Okay!" and then blindly follow the instructions of some unscrupulous China job recruiter who exists only on the internet or in China beyond the arm's reach of law enforcement. They are then fed plenty of hype and a pack of lies that usually includes one about making a small fortune. Here are the ten yop lies told be these dishonest job agents, most of whom have no business license and may have sold used cars in Cleveland before they stumbled into China themselves...http://opnlttr....

An open letter to Kelsey Costa, in response to her article "Let’s All Just Agree That Agriculture Is the Worst Major at Clemson": Normally, I'm not one to be offended. And I'm definitely not the type to be up in arms about something negatively spoken - or in this case, written - about myself or my friends. However, today is different. Today, I read an article about how Ag majors are loud, unclean, aggressively heterosexual, lazy, and just downright unintelligent. No, we aren't nursing majors like yourself. We're not engineers. We don't spend countless hours poring over textbooks and lecture notes every weekend to keep up with our classes. Simply put, we study the ins and outs of agricultural production in a hands on environment. Much of that pertains to the production of...
