Dear Premier Wynne,
You and your government have no doubt been following closely the latest developments in the controversy that surrounds the existence of The Beer Store in this province. I understand that you currently have a commission lead by Mr. Ed Clark tasked with reviewing the current system and are awaiting his report, and I have no interest in interfering with or impeding those efforts. What I would like to do, however, is add a voice I believe has been lacking from the debate to date, that of the Ontario beer consumer.
Thus far, Premier Wynne, most of the discussion surrounding the future of The Beer Store has revolved around finance and access for small breweries. What has not been properly addressed, however, are the needs and, indeed, the rights of those beer consumers...

Dear Jim Koch,
My name is Pat Berger and I'm a huge fan of yours. I've been following you and your brewery since the late 80's when I started home brewing and really getting into beer. Your Boston lager is both drinkable and flavorful with a soft malt background and a spicy noble hop finish. It does an equally great job at accompanying food as it does quenching a powerful thirst on a hot day. It is truly a great beer. As a veteran bartender it was often the Boston Lager I would crack open at the end of a long and grueling shift while I cleaned up and pondered life.
Your contributions to the popularity of craft beer cannot be measured in this short letter. From brewing tasty beer available almost everywhere to your integral part in the formation of the Brewers Association and even...

Dear Parents,
I am quite sure that you have all been in this situation at one time or another with at least one of your children. You know, when you pretty much know that your teens are going to drink alcohol at a party so you debate to yourself about whether or not to have the party at your own house rather than risk having the teens drink at a friend or acquaintance's home.
So, you most likely think to yourself that perhaps you should host the party at your house for many reasons including:
You will be able to keep an eye on the kids.
You will not allow the teens to drive if you notice that they are drunk.
You will get a chance to get to know the friends of your own teens and perhaps they might even think that you are cool and will like you and open up to you....

Dear Wendy’s shareholder,
Tomorrow is the big annual meeting in Dublin, Ohio, your chance to hear from your company’s executives and officers about the successes of the past year and the challenges of the year ahead. It’s also your chance to express your thoughts and concerns as a part owner of Wendy’s.
On the eve of tomorrow’s meeting, we here at the Coalition of Immokalee Workers would like to share with you our thoughts about the company’s position with regard to the Campaign for Fair Food. But before we do, we’d like to remind you of the words of one of your own, Mr. Bradford Grazier, a shareholder who stood to speak at last year’s meeting in New York after listening to the CIW’s presentation on the merits of the Fair Food Program. To be clear, Mr. Grazier spoke not as a...

To the people I meet in summer,
I'm what's known as a prolific self-harmer; I have self-harmed for a long time, to a severe extent.
In the summer, when it gets hot, I might wear shorts to walk my dogs, and since it's summer, maybe I'll even wear a short-sleeved top too.
If I do, you will notice the lines of deep scars that reside on my shins and thighs. You will see the pink, shining texture of my arms, where the scarring is so severe that the scars have amalgamated into a solid section of scar tissue. You will see the scars that rise from my hands, and the ones deeply-grooved into my arms. You will see them shine red, or glint white as they form a continual pattern all along my arms, shoulders, and chest.
If you stop to talk to me, please ignore them! I am by no means...

Dear New York Times Magazine Food Section,
It's very weird to be writing you right now because I've been reading you for so many years–almost a decade–and I feel sheepish calling you out in such a public forum. Let me start by saying that my motivations here are entirely pure; I'm writing as a fan, not a foe, and I want only the best for us both, you as a magazine food section and me as a reader.
But lately something's changed about your format and, as far as I'm concerned, it's ruining what used to be a cherished Sunday morning experience.
When the changes first started to happen, I took them in stride. Here's a nifty graphic by Mark Bittman showing all of the different ways you can use miso. Here's a gruff, no-nonsense account about grilling by Sam Sifton. Here's another nifty...

Dear Gordon:
I am writing to let you know that we are making a public commitment not to commercialize sterile seed technologies, such as the one dubbed "Terminator." We are doing this based on input from you and a wide range of other experts and stakeholders, including our very important grower constituency.
As you know, sterile seed technology is one of a class of so called "gene protection systems." This is a group of technologies, all still in the conceptual or developmental stage, that could potentially be used to protect the investment companies make in developing genetically-improved crops, as well as possibly providing other agronomic benefits. Some would work by rendering seeds from such crops sterile, while others would work by other means, such as deactivating only the...

Dear Mr Wacek,
It is of great concern to us, a group of scientists and researchers, that Richard E. Goodman has been appointed as Associate Editor for Biotechnology at the Journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology.
Dr Goodman is a former employee of Monsanto and has had a long-standing involvement in the International Life Sciences Institute, an organisation funded by major food and agricultural biotechnology companies, including Monsanto. ILSI has a controversial history in the US and Europe of influencing government risk-assessment methodologies that are used to assess the safety of products produced by its funder companies [1]. Dr Goodman's presence as editor for biotechnology will make it very difficult, if not impossible, to publish papers that find problems with GM crops or...

DEAR FRIENDS,
I am writing to you on the important occasion of the Containerisation International Awards Ceremony to share some background on World Food Programme’s humanitarian shipping operations.
WFP’s Ocean Transportation Service, part of the logistics division, is charged with the cost-efficient and effective delivery of humanitarian assistance to populations in need. Occupying a pivotal role in the organisation, the service bridges the upstream (planning and sourcing) and downstream (logistics delivery) of our supply chain.
Our unique position and direct links to industry allow insight and analysis of latest trends and developments in the shipping market, and our dedicated shipping service optimises lead times, provides agility and reliability to our country offices, and...

Dear Matt,
In co-founding water.org, it’s clear that you have made a personal, long-term commitment to providing clean water in developing countries.
Because of that commitment and in honor of World Water Day, I am asking you to join Food...
