Dear Dr. Heather Knight, I was disappointed to learn this morning that I was dis-invited from the lecture I was to deliver to the Pacific Union College Psychology and Social Work students this Thursday for their Colloquium (PSYC/SOWK 394). As much as I would like to have heard this decision from you directly, it was nice to speak with Dr. Nancy Lecourt. As you may know, she was my English professor when I was a student at PUC in 1989. In those days I was extremely conservative and even refused to read Candide, by Voltaire, for my Great Books class because Ellen White forbade the reading of fiction, especially the works of infidel authors such as Voltaire. Dr. Lecourt graciously offered me an independent study to delve more deeply into Ellen White’s position and my understanding of the...

Dear Family, I wanted to start by saying that you don’t know that I exist. I’m 19 now, almost 20. That’s two decades that I have been a living and breathing human being. I have a soul, a body, a mind that thinks too much and a lot of love to give. I’m not writing this to say that I’m mad, or upset, or broken but merely to say that I exist. You see… you will never know that I exist yet I know that you’re out there. I’ve come face-to-face with some of you and had to keep walking while I held a secret in the deepest realms of my being that you would never know. I’m your sister, aunt, niece and cousin. I’m not any less of a person because of this. I will not say this has been easy, because it hasn’t been. Imagine if you’d lived with this secret for 20 years? I’m not looking for guilt...

Dear President Buhari: When you visited the United States Institute of Peace last July, you pledged that you would be “fair, just and scrupulously follow due process and the rule of law, as enshrined in [the Nigerian] constitution” in prosecuting corruption. Such loftiness is laudable. As the Bible instructs in Amos 5:24: “[L]et justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” But to be just, the law must be evenhanded. It cannot, in the manner of Russian President Vladimir Putin, be something that is given to punish your enemies and withheld to favor your friends. If so, the law becomes an instrument of injustice bearing earmarks of the wicked rather than the good. In the United States, you declared a policy of “zero tolerance” against corruption...

Dear Dr. Horton: In February, 2011, The Lancet published an article called “Comparison of adaptive pacing therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, graded exercise therapy, and specialist medical care for chronic fatigue syndrome (PACE): a randomized trial.” The article reported that two “rehabilitative” approaches, cognitive behavior therapy and graded exercise therapy, were effective in treating chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, ME/CFS and CFS/ME. The study received international attention and has had widespread influence on research, treatment options and public attitudes. The PACE study was an unblinded clinical trial with subjective primary outcomes, a design that requires strict vigilance in order to prevent the possibility of bias. Yet the study...

Dear Morrissey, In the hope that you might consider bringing your much-rumoured memoir to The House of Eliot, I am posting this letter on the Faber website. Forlorn as this hope may be, I can only fantasise that at least you might read my letter through and consider the pleasures and prestige of being an author at Faber, the last great family-owned independent publishing house in the western hemisphere. I have been trying to persuade you of the virtues and wisdom of this for some years now. You probably won’t remember. We even corresponded at one point via a friend of yours, an author of mine, most famous for his biography of Roxy Music which ends just as the band are getting together. You see, we love the perverse and the contrary at Faber. And we also like to think we are the...

Dear Open Letter Writer, It’s me, your pen-pal. We’ve never met, but you’ve written me so many letters that it feels like we’re the best of friends. On Tuesday, I got one from Mark Zuckerberg saying he’s going to end disease, and two days earlier there was one from Kobe Bryant about why he’s retiring. To be fair, it was addressed to “Basketball“– but I’ve played “Horse” before, so, yep, sent to me again. This season seems to have given us a flowering of open letter writers. Weeks before Bryant and Zuckerberg sealed their digital envelopes, Ta-Nehisi Coates won the National Book Award for his open letter to his son Between the World and Me. Days before that, Weeds actress Mary Louise Parker released a collection of open letters in the form of her new book, Dear Mr. You. Of course...

I am writing you with much concern after having read of your hearing to decide whether the alternative theory of Intelligent Design should be taught along with the theory of Evolution. I think we can all agree that it is important for students to hear multiple viewpoints so they can choose for themselves the theory that makes the most sense to them. I am concerned, however, that students will only hear one theory of Intelligent Design. Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is...

Dear Aziz Ansari, mgid-uma-image-mtv I heard what you said on Master of None. When I first saw you get dragged on Tumblr for being anti-Black, I gave you the benefit of the doubt. I watched the Indians on TV episode for myself, hoping to see if your character’s harmful words had been taken out of context. They weren’t. Frustrated by the lack of Asian representation in Hollywood, your character Dev lashed out at Black and gay people. He said, “People don’t get that fired up about racist Asian or Indian stuff. I feel like you only risk starting a brouhaha if you say something bad about Black people or gay people.” Not only was this ignorant, but specifically I want to call attention to how it was anti-Black (and homophobic, but that’s for another article). That entire...

Dear Family and Friends, While everyone is celebrating the fall leaves changing and pumpkin spice everything, I'm over here stocking up on hand sanitizer and vitamin C. It's that dreaded time of year again for me: flu and cold season -- my least favorite season. With every cough and sneeze that I hear, my anxiety climbs a little higher. My ears are like sonar radars and I can hear them from a mile away. And of course, when I find the culprits, more often than not they are not covering their mouths. C'mon people, kids know to cough into their elbows, so I know you can too. Getting sick for me is so much more than a couple days off watching Netflix. It could be really scary actually. Getting a cold, or the flu, for me could mean a two week stay in the joint -- aka the hospital --...
