Save Our Refinery - an open letter to the AWU and AMWU

Dear AWU and AMWU,

Currently, there are people at the gates of our refinery stopping people from safely accessing their workplace.

You say this is a community picket. The people picketing do not represent our community.

We work here every day; trying to keep the refinery a viable business. We donate and raise money for charity. We have families and homes here. We won’t have this for much longer if you do not stop your illegal action. We have been advised that in the coming days we will all be required to stand down, without pay. You are hurting our refinery.

You say this is because of safety concerns in the refinery. Then what are they? If you have safety issues, tell us what they are so we can work together as a site to resolve any problems.

If this is truly about making this site safer, why are your requests for increased pay rates? Why do you need to verbally threaten and harass any union member who considers crossing your picket line? Why do you need to attack off-site muster points to insight fear in these groups? Your action is damaging our community.

You say it’s not your refinery. So go home and leave our refinery alone! We still want the refinery here.

Regards,
A Geelong Refinery Employee
