an open letter about depression

there's a lot of people in the world who all swear they're depressed. in some of these cases it may be true, but others not so much.
depression is a lot more than people think. it isn't just being sad over something, it's being sad and not understanding why. when you're depressed you don't really feel anything, you wish you could and you wish you could explain why you've been in bed since 7 yesterday morning just laying there. you wish you had the motivation to get up and shower and just wash your hair but you can't because you're stuck in that bed just wondering when you're going to feel like you have to. walking into work and putting on the fake smile you think you've mastered and saying hi to all your coworkers who just think you're tired, which isn't all false. being depressed is getting 10+ hours of sleep every night and waking up in the morning exhausted and just wanting to sleep more, but you know you can't. not enjoying things you used to love is nothing new.
it saddens me when people cry depression when they don't get what they want or when their favorite character in the show they're watching dies. it's like people feel cool to say they're depressed and like they'd fit in more if they were. I want people to understand that depression is so much more than just being sad and before you claim you're depressed really think about what you're saying. you're not depressed, you're sad and there is a very big difference.
