To My Little Sister, My Friend & My Enemy

I just thought you should know that I miss you. I won't tell you that directly because we aren't talking. I need you to know that the things you said cut through me like a hot knife through butter. Your words took me back to one of the worst times in my life and it kills me that you unleashed such heart breaking words so effortlessly. I know we've always had our differences, our imperfections, our flaws. That's true of every pair of siblings. I understand that, but those things shouldn't become ammunition in any situation. I wouldn't tell people your business because you're my little sister and my first goal has always been to protect you. I wouldn't drag up your past to make you feel small and I certainly wouldn't do so behind your back. I'd like to think you'd do the same for me. You're still young yet, you'll learn soon enough that everyone has a past, everyone makes mistakes, and everyone wishes they could erase a chapter or two.

But here's the kicker, Sis. You're always going to be my only sister, my only sibling. You will always be someone I love dearly, even when you make me so mad I can't see straight. I know (through our mother) that things aren't going all that great for you right now. I wish I had some magic advice for you that would fix it all. I don't. Usually we can go for a drive, vent and laugh and try to solve it together, but this time is different. This time you're burning even your oldest bridges as if they never meant a thing. I haven't faced situations identical to yours but we both know I've fought many wars in my time and burnt many bridges. It is not wise, but you can't see that right now. But it's ok. As hurt as I am I can't stand to see you miserable and I want you to know the door is open if you need to talk. If you choose to go it alone I'll understand that too. Sometimes we need to understand things in a way that requires a touch of isolation. No matter what you choose to do I have faith in you and I know you can do anything in the world if you set your stubborn mind to it. The good thing about bridges is you can always build new ones. Good luck, Sis. I love you.
