The first episode of the 4th season of Sherlock depicts events taking place in Tbilisi, Georgia. British embassy in Tbilisi is captured by terrorists. British hostages (the good guys) are saved by special freelancer semi-criminal squad of agents (the only member of the group we've met in previous seasons is British). The terrorists on the other hand, have no names, look like dangerous criminals who enjoy killing and torturing people for fun. Oh, and they speak Russian!!!

To begin with the events occurring in Tbilisi, Georgia, are completely fictitious and absolutely do not represent the reality of Georgia. We don`t speak Russian here! (Some of us can speak it, but it is not a language you are required to know or are forced to speak). The portrayal of Georgia as a Russian-speaking terrorist division is a huge offence to a country which has been openly advocating against Russian colonialist policies for years. Russian has never been the official language of Georgia – it is Georgian language, and it has never been a terrorist division. Thus, the events depicted are absolutely inadequate and false.

Furthermore, popular media plays a huge role in creating popular images, especially when it comes to Georgia, the country most people in the world would struggle to locate on a map. Thus, Sherlock – a show that is watched by millions around the world – should not be reinforcing or creating stereotypes of countries/people from a post-colonial perspective.

What are the solutions you might wonder?

Dear producers of the show, all we ask is for you to be more sensitive and consider your standpoint! And when you tell politically charged “fairy-tales”, at least indicate that they are fictitious and are far from reality.

People from the former empire of Great Britain – a country with a long history of colonizing vast parts of the world -- need to be more aware of the privilege they enjoy compared to countries colonized in the past and influenced by neo-colonial forces of the West, as well as Russia. We – the authors of this article are feminists and human rights activists from Georgia. We have to confront inaccurate perceptions of our country on a regular basis; we are often told that “there is war in Georgia”, that we are “a part of Russia”, that we speak Russian here – the list goes on and on, but you know what is worse? When you are a woman from what they call the 3rd world and people don`t even know anything about you, when as a Georgian person you blend in a grand anti-Russian narrative of the west, when you are reduced to a stereotype of a dark-haired male terrorist, when you always remain the “other”.

We hope that this open letter will remind us all that each step we take has consequences and sometimes these consequences are irreparable, and we need to be careful so as to avoid spreading false messages.
