An Open Letter to My Best Friend Who's Still in High School

We’re a year apart but that was never an issue because we were in high school together. But everything changed as soon as my countdown to graduation came to end and I was in my oversized white gown and finally turned the tassel and threw my cap up in the air. When my high school career came to a close, that was when the countdown to college began.

Most people get excited about starting college, but not me. Not only was I nervous about being in a new place and meeting new people and have everything just be completely different, but I felt like I was leaving you. We met my senior year and your junior year, but it felt like I knew you all my life. You kept reassuring me that when I got to college I wouldn’t be leaving you but it sure felt like it. I was going to a new place and starting a new adventure without you being present.

When we were both out of school for the summer, we texted and FaceTimed sun up until sundown to get as many moments together as possible before the dreaded “Move-In Day” came upon us. We kept talking about how it would be so different when I finally started college and how we would be talking less and less because of the excessive amount of work that I’d be assigned. Sometimes out of nowhere I would get extremely sad and told you I didn’t want to leave you but you made me feel better about it. You told me that I wasn’t leaving you because the friendship wasn’t ending, I’m just starting a new chapter and you’ll just be farther than what we wanted and that we’d still get to talk but not as much as we’d like.

Move-In Day was a struggle. I was so busy with moving everything in, orientation, unpacking and decorating that we barely talked that day, and I thought that’s what this whole year would be like. But as the weeks kept going on, something happened that we both didn’t expect. I had more free time to talk to you. We both thought that college would consume my time but we were both wrong. I had more time to talk to you. I have an average of 2 classes per day and the only time we wouldn’t talk was when I was in class. We were being so dramatic and for nothing.

You’re now in the same position that I was last year. You’re counting down the days until graduation and looking forward to starting a new life in college with new people. This time around we know what to expect for next year and won’t be sad and dramatic over the summer. But we’re obviously still going to text and FaceTime from sun up until sundown because that’s what we do here. I love and miss you everyday and can’t wait to see you again. YOU’RE ALMOST IN COLLEGE!!!!!!
