AN OPEN LETTER TO MARK ZUCKERBERG: WE NEED MORE THAN A “LIKE”

Dear Mark Zuckerberg,
I like Facebook. In fact, I think I “like” its group on Facebook. But if something terrible were to happen to Facebook, say it has come down with the flu or has had an accident in the family – I am not sure I would like that. Meaning, I am not sure I would “like” that on Facebook. In fact, I would feel terrible for you and your family and my initial reaction would be to dislike your circumstances. But time and time again when users share devastating news on Facebook it is followed with a plethora of “likes.” Is there something to be said about the people that “like” obituaries on Facebook? I can’t quite wrap my head around it. I mean, they don’t actually mean they like it, right? Then what do they mean? Can you do something about this discrepancy? Sure, I would like to acknowledge another person’s situation but a comment is not always necessary and the only other option is the “like” button. I feel you’re missing an opportunity here. Mind you, I don’t necessarily believe in a “dislike” button because society tends to skew on the negative side and that could be a recipe for a downer disaster. Hmm, I am starting to think your team has already had this conversation. It’s quite the predicament.
Yours truly,
Tianna
