An Open Letter to Donald Trump (& his supporters)

Donald Trump. You have caused quite a scene in this country. You've lied, cheated, and spewed hate and yet still somehow managed to convince enough of this country that you were qualified to lead us. In the wake of the election night, we have seen a tremendous divide, one that neither you nor your supporters seem to understand.

On my pages, I've seen numerous Trump supporters shame the protests. They've called protesters 'sore losers' and accused them of treating you unfairly. You've even chimed in to do this as well. What you're all missing is the point of their protests.

Throughout your campaign you openly inspired hate towards minorities. You degraded women. You shamed LGBTQ. There is a reason that so many of your supporters feel justified in their hate crimes. There is a reason that the number of hate crimes has increased since both your campaign as well as your election.

You are our president, and it's time to act like it. As president, you should try to understand their protests and work to stop them. Instead of blaming them for treating you unfairly, listen to their concerns. As president, you're now responsible for this nation. You're responsible for the good, and bad. The fact that people, your supporters, are using your name to commit hate crimes should scare you. It should offend you, yet you've said nothing about this. You haven't shamed them. You haven't addressed the people being attacked. You haven't brought them peace, or support. No, you've remained to be selfish.

Your response to this crisis, and the increase in hate crimes, is exactly as I expected. It's why I did not vote for you. Instead of helping those who need it, you've continuously chosen the selfish route. Our president cannot be selfish.

But, it's only been two days. You have at least 4 years left. You CAN improve. I can't speak for everyone who didn't vote for you, but I can speak for myself in that an apology would go a long way.

To his supporters. Start to advocate against the hate crimes. Instead of attacking family members, friends, or anyone who doesn't support Trump -- try to understand why. Then, try to stop the hate by using your voice. You say that he's got the people in mind, but his actions say otherwise. You say that you don't support that part of him, but your actions say otherwise. Our nation doesn't have to accept the hate, and I would like to believe that a majority of Trump supporters don't support this, but it's hard when you've said nothing to call out 'your own' for their wrongdoings. If you don't support the bigotry, racism & hate that Trump spoke and embodies, don't stay silent. Don't excuse it (this is number 1, words are not 'just words')! Don't ignore it. Don't say 'it'll get better'. Act, understand, and use your voice. There's a reason everyone's scared, try now to help alleviate their fear. You are the ones who are furthering the divide, by disregarding these facts.

To Donald Trump. Instead of blaming the protesters, you could publicly discuss what they're protesting. You could retract the hateful words you spoke during your campaign. You could convince your supporters that this reaction is not what you would want. You could inspire the hate crimes to stop. You could apologize, and subsequently you could save lives.

We are all Americans, but we are not all the same. Now is the time to come together to insure the safety of all people. Now is the time to stop the hate.
